Dr. Tanja Buhlmann (geb. Müller)

Since my earliest studies in biology, neurobiology as well as genetics were in the centre of my interest. I performed my doctoral thesis at the Institute of Neurology  (Frankfurt aM., Germany) focussing on the regulation of transcription factors during adult neurogenesis. During that time, I started working on a side project on modulating protease activity in high-grade glioma cells. Glial tumours fascinate me since I looked up their pathology in the literature the first time. From a scientific point of view, it is a tremendous challenging disease mainly originating from the high degree of complexity on all imaginable levels. On patient site, high-grade gliomas represent an inevitably fatal disease that leads to death within several month independent of the treatment strategy. My fascination brought me to the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) where I was offered a position as post-doctoral fellow in the Luxembourg Center for Neuropathology (LCNP). I got the chance to develop my own research projects centred on functional genomic approaches to identify invasion-promoting genes in high-grade gliomas. During my time in Luxembourg, I especially gained knowledge and experiences in applying CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology, but I also learned how to work in a highly translational research environment. Since 2023, I am part of the newly established Translational Neuro-Oncology MSNZ Junior Group at the University Hospital in Frankfurt aM., Germany.
